Choosing The Right Backsplash For Your Kitchen

When renovating your kitchen there are 3 main elements to consider: Cabinets, Back splash and Flooring which together makes a huge impact on the overall look and design of your kitchen. Here we are sharing some tips for when you are off to choose the perfect back splash tile for your kitchen makeover.

SUBWAY TILES
Gone are the days of those square and strip mosaic tiles, today with the range of tiles available you can turn your kitchen into a work of art and then put some art up on the walls too. Starting with the basic subway tile which is a classic with its rectangular shape and clean lines, it is most commonly used in white providing the perfect background to any cabinet or flooring. If you are a color lover then consider aqua or a more bohemian color to bring an eclectic flavor to the room.

Consider how you want to lay your subway tiles next, you have the option to lay them staggered in a brick formation, or one below the other for a very modern look or angled in a chevron pattern. Here at the Cedarglen Kitchen Remodel we laid the tile one below the other giving the room a very modern vibe.

MATCHING COUNTER TOPS WITH BACK SPLASH
Here are some beautiful kitchens where they have continued the granite or marble counter onto the back splash making the space look seamless and larger. This is a great option for a tiny kitchen as it gives a sense of continuity to the space. Am loving the black cabinets that contrast well with the white giving the room an almost graphic feel. The open shelves, pops of green, black lighting...........they got it all right here, didn't they!

GEOMETRICS & TEXTURE

For a modern contemporary look consider going for geometric patterns or texture in your tiles. Today the progress they have made in tile products is quite amazing. At the Jeffcoat kitchen remodel we chose 30 x 10'' large format textured tile resulting in less grout lines and more focus on the tiles. The pretty pattern and texture brings a softness to the all black cabinets and contrasts well with the grey/brown floors.

HIGH CONTRAST

Contrast lovers will adore the below options of pairing darks with lights creating a fun energetic vibe in the room. From grey concrete tiles to exposed brick and high impact black mosaic these fearless home owners have really brought personality to their kitchen spaces through these bold choices. Good design comes from taking calculated risks and if this makes you nervous then consider bringing in the pros to make the right choices first time round.

PATTERNS & PRINT
The big trend right now is patterned tile that comes in either cement or porcelain finishes. They are being used either as back splash, flooring, in washrooms, mudrooms, literally everywhere. They come in a  range of fun prints and patterns allowing you to really let your inner artist shine. The great thing about the prints is that they come in subtle colors or high impact graphic designs, small prints to large prints, flat surfaces to highly textured leaving you with a wide range to select from.

Jeffcoat Basement Entertainment Room Reveal in Etobicoke

We have been busy the last few months working on a 30+ yrs old basement in a house originally built in the 1940's. The Etobicoke basement needed a complete overhaul and we transformed it into a modern entertainment room, light filled kitchen, sleek washroom and a spare room. Here we reveal how we took this tiny space, blew out walls, moved and added gas lines, and reworked HVAC ducts to open the entire 800+ sq ft space that would meet with our clients entertaining needs.

The main room was covered in faux wood cladding, false ceiling panels and a vinyl floor. The space was divided into a larger sitting area, and a smaller mechanical cum storage room. By breaking the wall between the furnace room and the main room we created one large space. The Furnace, water heater and laundry pair were hidden behind double bi-fold doors that were painted the same color of the walls to lessen the impact that white doors would have. Flush handles maintain the sleek look without protruding out as would regular knob handles.

The Entertainment area was zoned into Home Theater, Custom wet bar and Darts game area.

6 x 24 Wood Look Plank Porcelain Tile throughout the space. An unwieldy support pillar called for a custom treatment that is reminiscent of  an Egyptian Obelisk
Lighting options include zoned lighting, recessed fittings, ceiling fittings and wall sconces. All light sources are LED
Upgraded Step Bevel baseboards and casing throughout the space add a level of sophistication. Three niches were constructed to add architectural interest to the space.
Glass Railings with Brushed Nickel Handrails were selected to open up the space and add a modern touch
Our client, a championship darts player has a dedicated darts board that matches the space while maintaining full functionality with a dedicated spot light and integrated score board
LED RGB strip lighting was integrated into the crown moulding and can be selected to show any color in the visible spectrum

CUSTOM HOME WET BAR featuring
  • Solid butcher block counter tops with waterfall edges
  • Backlit (LEDs) frosted glass panel on front of bar whose color can be adjusted to display any color
  • Recessed LED lighting for counter top
  • Double niches for display with integrated lighting
  • Door under stairs custom built for glasses, swings open to reveal storage under stairs
  • Chrome under counter sink and matching hardware
  • Floor is tiled with wood look porcelain tiles
  • All control panels for the lights are touch screen and are recessed in the bar front
  • Screwless face plates used for all switches

The custom built glass display door opens to reveal storage under the stairs

SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON HOBBIES - At Wilde North Interiors we are always excited when a client requests that their hobby or collection be integrated into the design. The homeowner, a championship darts player, had requested that his darts board figure somewhere in to the scheme. We eschewed the traditional pub like darts cabinets and opted instead to custom build a recessed cabinet covered by Ikea Jutis doors using blum 270 degree full inset hinges. The inside of the doors were covered in hardboard and painted with blackboard paint to serve a dual purpose as a score board and to protect the glass doors from stray darts. A LED pin spot lights up the darts board when being used.

Home Theater built for 7.1 speaker systems,  recessed media cabinet, hidden subwoofer,

A double wall allowed us to mount a fully articulated TV bracket onto the primary wall allowing the TV to sit flush against the secondary wall. The resultant chase allowed us to hide all cables between the Media Cabinet and TV

Recessed LED lighting in the stairs
Glass railings and Crystal chandeliers add to the modern look

Light will guide you home ...

And ignite you bones ......

And I will try to fix your Basement!!!!!!!!

Cue guitars......

We thank our lovely clients for giving us this opportunity to transform their living space and having faith in our design vision. This basement is a labor of love for us and we wish our clients many years of enjoying this space with family and friends.

Work has started on the next basement in Missisauga - RAINPARK BASEMENT - and sneak peeks will be leaked on Instagram so follow along to stay in the loop. See more of our work and keep in touch with us through Facebook, Pinterest or Newsletter.

Jeffcoat Kitchen Before / After Reveal in Etobicoke Basement

We have been busy the last few months working on a 30+ yrs old basement in Etobicoke,ON that needed a complete overhaul. The basement was transformed into a modern entertainment room, light filled kitchen, sleek washroom and a spare room. We reveal how we took this tiny space and blew out walls, moved gas lines, bulk heads to open the entire 800+ sq ft space that allowed for the clients to entertain in.

The client has an upstairs electric kitchen which is hardly used. The kitchen in the basement has a gas stove which she prefers using so it was only natural that she would want this space renovated. See how we added several custom features and endless storage options for our sweet client who absolutely loves to cook.

30+ yr old Kitchen
The kitchen had very limited storage and a poor layout with the cooking range planted right at the doorway forcing people to squeeze past. Not enough counter space for prep meant the client had to add a makeshift table in the room reducing the foot print even further. Our challenge was to provide for endless storage, a solution for the spices, appliances and better lighting.

We designed a U shaped kitchen with the farmhouse sink taking center stage, the range hood on the left and fridge on the right. This kept the work triangle tight. We gave the client several storage options from glass fronted custom cabinets, to shelving & deep drawers, blind spot pull out carousels and a 90'' floor-to-ceiling spice rack, two appliance garages and so much more. See the transformation here:

Our client absolutely loves the black and white combination but if you prefer lighter colors, check out the other white kitchens we completed earlier this year. I 'm not much of a cook but even I want to whip up a pie in this luxurious space, and with that floor-to-ceiling spice rack I could make a new dish every day! Not really! ha ha luckily my family are not foodies and we can get by with eggs.

Thank you to our wonderful clients for giving us this opportunity to work in and on your home. It has been our absolute pleasure transforming this space for you.

We also added a custom home wet bar, Darts game area and entertainment room in the same basement. So be sure to check back for the reveals happening in the next few weeks. Go check out the other basements we completed in the past.
