National Home Show 2017 Toronto

Just back from attending the National Home Show 2017 at the Enercare center Toronto and came home armed with a suite of great contacts for materials and supplies. Here we share with you some of the highlights of the show and what impressed us the most.

First up was this gorgeous kitchen which was our absolute favorite. The clean lines, flat doors (no handles) and layered islands made this contemporary kitchen really stand out. My favorite was the stainless steel clad island - cleaning is a piece of cake with this! We liked how they combined three islands in different materials, heights and finishes yet kept it looking cohesive. All cabinetry was automatic and we liked that as the flat surfaces devoid of handles just added to the overall look.

Another fabulous booth was this beautiful space designed by Glen and Jamie of Peloso Alexander Interiors. They combined the Benjamin Moore 'shadow' color of the year so well with the curved velvet furniture. Velvet is so back! Would you believe that marble effect behind the bookshelf below is a wallpaper! yes its a wallpaper. Such a great option when you have a tight budget.

Soapstone sinks. Soapstone counters. Dhiraj was very impressed with this option for future bars he is designing. Its a softer matt material which feels warmer than granite.

One of my favorites is cabinet hardware and we spotted some luxurious finishes here. Of course I veer towards gold and champagne tones the most but also spotted some great lucite and jade options too.

Always on the lookout for vanities and these options here  provided us with many ideas including all the sink options - crystal anyone?!

Project Dancing Waters: Interior Design & Decor - BEFORE

While Dhiraj has been busy with the Rainpark project, I have been working on the Dancing Waters project in Brampton where we are completing the Interior Design & Decor for our lovely client's new build home. They are looking to transform their beautiful newly constructed house into a cozy family space that they can both relax and entertain in.

Before we start work on the design plan we complete a lot of research with an aim to finding out more about our clients so we can inject their personality & story into the space. In this case we found out our young clients first met at a coffee shop and that was the starting point for us. The dining room will be transformed into an intimate lounge area with a coffee shop vibe and lots of subtle touches alluding to how they met. It will be flanked by a library / reading space with a fully stocked library and custom seating.
Original Dining Room

Rather than having two dining spaces like most new houses have with one formal dining room and the breakfast nook, we instead decided to turn the breakfast nook into a more formal dining space and make it more part of the living room.

The formal living room has a beautiful fireplace flanked by huge windows which will become the focal point of the room.

Additionally we will also be working on their foyer and master bedroom. See more of our Interior Design & Decor projects HERE and watch this space for the big reveal coming soon. To see more big reveals follow us on Instagram or subscribe to our Newsletter to be among the first. Thank you so much for following along on our many projects and design adventures. We are excited for 2017 and hope you will continue to be a part of our design journey.

Our Favorite Dining Rooms

Our favorite dining rooms by Wilde North Interiors
Would you believe Christmas is in exactly 20 days!! This is our favorite time of the year and there is absolutely no doubt that Christmas brings people together. Family, friends, strangers, pets................... everyone is drawn together in the favorite room of all: the Dining Room.

Here are some of our favorite Dining rooms giving you plenty of ideas for refreshing your own home in time for the holidays. When you have a small dining room consider a round table and mix it with complementary chairs to create a cozy dining space. Here the wicker chairs are paired with a Swedish wood round table, two different elements but since they have the same tones it makes them work together beautifully, while also bringing some texture into the room.

The beautiful home of Kara Rosenlund where she has combined the iconic Tulip table with mismatched chairs in her dining room is simple yet stunning. By sticking to one palette she has managed to make the different elements work in harmony.

If you have the luxury of a larger dining room then a rectangular table is much more favored as its seats more people. By adding complimentary chairs, artwork and statement lighting you can transform your dining space into a warm and cozy room for long conversations over delicious meals.

When considering lighting you can either go for one large chandelier or multiples like in the case of the Blackband Project below. We love how the tables have been paired with different yet complimentary chairs like in the pics below, a favorite being the leather chairs and concrete table combination. Or even how eras have been mixed up where Tulip chairs have been paired with a vintage mahogany table.

Probably our most favorite dining rooms is where they have combined vintage furniture especially something with brass in it. Our trips to Brimfield & Aberfoyle Antique Markets are a must every year as we get to peruse Vintage furniture from several decades and dream about how to use them in our projects.

How To Use Dark Paint Colors In Your Home

WILDE NORTH INTERIORS

Benjamin Moore's Color of the Year, Shadow 2117-30, is allusive and enigmatic — a master of ambiance.

“It ebbs and flows with its surroundings, and light brings it to life. Rich, royal amethyst can fade into the soft lilac-grey of distant mountains or morph into lustrous coal. Indulge your mysterious side. Let Shadow set the mood.”

—Ellen O’Neill, Creative Director

With Benjamin Moore declaring "Shadow" as their color of the year 2017 we thought of rounding up our favorite rooms in this beautiful moody color showing you how to use darker shades in your home. Shadow is a deep grey color with a tint of aubergine or purple in it giving it layers of depth and movement.

There are so many ways to use this color, either by going bold and painting the whole room in Shadow or taking a safer approach with just one focal wall. It is a color than can turn a space into a cozy living room, into a moody bedroom or into an elegant office/study/den. You can balance the darker shades with lots of white in the ceiling, baseboards, crown molding and doors drawing the light into the room.

Personally I like to paint small rooms a dark shade as it instantly brings a sense of drama and flair to the space, turning it into a conversation starter. These rooms would make perfect settings for a post dinner cocktail or liqueur, a reading nook or just some "Me" time.

Here some of our favorite designers have paired it with white or other complimentary colors to bring out the true richness in this beautiful hue. Below the study was painted in dark grey while leaving the center section bright white. Light floors and furniture keep the room feeling open and airy. Rich tones were brought in through the rug and gold touches were added through the light fixtures and framed art below.

Foyers and entrance ways painted in a darker shade make for a rich and luxurious welcome look. Add a glam chandelier in crystal that pops against the dark walls and it speaks volumes for your passionate personality. Looking to pick statement lighting then check out our blog post here to guide you.

Rather than trying to hide the shape of that wall, the designer here painted it in a strong color turning it into a statement. Pairing the grey wall with lots of white and warm tones in the faux fur rug and animal skin carpet brings balance to the room.

Art and accessories stand out against a darker grey, thats probably why most art galleries / art schools are usually painted grey. In the pic above painting the focal wall in a darker shade turned the fireplace into a feature. In the Rainpark Basement we have painted the fireplace wall matt black and added reveal beads turning it into a focal point in the room. See progress shots of the design & construction of this basement HERE on our website.

And my favorite feature about dark walls is that books look great against it. Just look at the above two rooms layered in beautiful books, artwork and artifacts. You can't help but sink into those couches and never want to leave.

So what do you think? Willing to consider this color in one of your rooms? Start small or maybe even go mid-tone and not entirely dark if you are unsure of how you will react to the color. Maybe do a swatch test to see how the color acts during different times of the day. Paint is really the easiest and cheapest way to bring about a change in a room so why not give it a go.

Stay tuned for the reveal pics of our Rainpark Basement remodel where we painted the fireplace wall a deep dark black to compliment the aqua custom bar and white walls.
