Pit Stop: Factory Tile Depot

Continuing on with our PIT STOP series here are a few photos of when we stopped over at Factory Tile Depot looking for tiles for the Rainpark Basement Remodel project. We are building a custom bar, fireplace, yoga room, home theater and 3pc washroom in this unfinished space. Tiles are being sourced for the front of bar counter, floor of bar and washroom.

This Tile shop was pretty impressive in that it was a large facility, well laid out and with a great selection of tiles. We liked the fact that they had tables laid out for customers to take their samples to and discuss/argue over. (Do we argue? Nooooo - we have the same taste so we end up picking the exact same option). Plus seating, there was lots of seating - you never find seating in shops like this otherwise.

Here we are featuring a few of the tiles that caught our attention.

My favorite feature in the showroom, a whole wall framed with some of their prettiest white tiles. I am a sucker for anything white. Click below to see video of this stunning wall of unique tiles.

Dhiraj perusing the large format floor tiles. He chooses large format as there are less grout lines then.

Pretty printed Hexagon tiles, great for a kitchen floor or shower stall when you want to bring some pattern into the mix

Absolutely loved this one with the pretty design and soft edges. Another great option for a backsplash or washroom. 

An imprint of lace on tile, this is so Genius. This would look absolutely gorgeous in a spa-like washroom, a very feminine space for a classy lady.

My favorite color combination in white, taupe and grey and we absolutely loved the small hex tiles with their soft edges. A very pretty look indeed for a back splash option.

Large format hex tiles, again a great option for a washroom shower stall if you are going for a contemporary look

Distressed tile in various muted colors, this is a great option for a mud room rustic look. The advancement they have made in Tile designs is very impressive.

Imagine having this look without the roughness of distressed wood. Smooth and easy to clean this is a great option for flooring or a feature wall.

Choosing The Right Backsplash For Your Kitchen

When renovating your kitchen there are 3 main elements to consider: Cabinets, Back splash and Flooring which together makes a huge impact on the overall look and design of your kitchen. Here we are sharing some tips for when you are off to choose the perfect back splash tile for your kitchen makeover.

SUBWAY TILES

Gone are the days of those square and strip mosaic tiles, today with the range of tiles available you can turn your kitchen into a work of art and then put some art up on the walls too. Starting with the basic subway tile which is a classic with its rectangular shape and clean lines, it is most commonly used in white providing the perfect background to any cabinet or flooring. If you are a color lover then consider aqua or a more bohemian color to bring an eclectic flavor to the room. 

Consider how you want to lay your subway tiles next, you have the option to lay them staggered in a brick formation, or one below the other for a very modern look or angled in a chevron pattern. Here at the Cedarglen Kitchen Remodel we laid the tile one below the other giving the room a very modern vibe.

MATCHING COUNTER TOPS WITH BACK SPLASH

Here are some beautiful kitchens where they have continued the granite or marble counter onto the back splash making the space look seamless and larger. This is a great option for a tiny kitchen as it gives a sense of continuity to the space. Am loving the black cabinets that contrast well with the white giving the room an almost graphic feel. The open shelves, pops of green, black lighting...........they got it all right here, didn't they!

GEOMETRICS & TEXTURE

For a modern contemporary look consider going for geometric patterns or texture in your tiles. Today the progress they have made in tile products is quite amazing. At the Jeffcoat kitchen remodel we chose 30 x 10'' large format textured tile resulting in less grout lines and more focus on the tiles. The pretty pattern and texture brings a softness to the all black cabinets and contrasts well with the grey/brown floors.

HIGH CONTRAST

Contrast lovers will adore the below options of pairing darks with lights creating a fun energetic vibe in the room. From grey concrete tiles to exposed brick and high impact black mosaic these fearless home owners have really brought personality to their kitchen spaces through these bold choices. Good design comes from taking calculated risks and if this makes you nervous then consider bringing in the pros to make the right choices first time round.

PATTERNS & PRINT

The big trend right now is patterned tile that comes in either cement or porcelain finishes. They are being used either as back splash, flooring, in washrooms, mudrooms, literally everywhere. They come in a  range of fun prints and patterns allowing you to really let your inner artist shine. The great thing about the prints is that they come in subtle colors or high impact graphic designs, small prints to large prints, flat surfaces to highly textured leaving you with a wide range to select from.

Fall Home Show Toronto 2016 Highlights

We had the pleasure of visiting the Toronto Fall Home Show thanks to complimentary tickets from our lovely clients. It was a much smaller exhibition compared to the National Home Show in Spring and more product focused, nevertheless we got to review some great products like the Hidden Bed options for future projects, some sleek furniture designs and fabulous lighting options. 

Can you spot the bowler hat pendant light. One of these gorgeous pendants is making it into the Birchbankwest Washroom Remodel.

Hidden beds or Murphy Beds are a solution many of our clients ask us about. Space saving solutions is what we love coming up with and we were able to review a number of suppliers at the show. Believe it or not there is a full bed hidden behind those cabinets and the workstation below. These are great options for condos or even for a home office for when you need an extra bed for guests.

Luxurious blue velvet tufted couch and chrome table, a great option for a modern space.

Am still a fan of huge round mirrors which explains why we put an Ikea Stockholm walnut finish one in our upstairs washroom. And how cute are those gymnasts on the sleek poles on the left side of the cabinet ! 

Y`all know we love brass and velvet. So no brainer with these chairs.

Great to see another supplier of Chalk based paints. This is a great option for when you are painting directly over a finished piece of furniture. See our blog post where share with you TIPS on how to use Chalk Paint.

The highlight of the show was seeing Lynne Knowlton`s vintage Air Stream completely renovated and we almost died when we heard it was up for sale ! Have ya seen her Instagram account where she showcases her tree houses, cabins and campers all beautifully decorated in her signature style and up for rent. We met Lynne`s daughter and her boyfriend and we got a chance to tell them how much of a fan we are of Lynne`s work. We then tagged Lynne in my Instagram post and she replied back! She replied back guys ! Celebrity replied back ! Excuse the fan gushing here people. Its just that I am always tickled when celebrities reply back to me on Insta - like that time Colin and Justin replied back to me too ! Yes they did ! The decor is simple and clean with white everywhere and touches of gold. Small details like the `guardian angel`note, gold faucet and the star lantern are Lynne`s signature touches which just turns this Air Stream into a magical place to stay in. 

Excuse the hazy pix folks, we were trying to photograph the camper and take in the little details all at the same time.........like this sweet note Lynne had put up above the temp gauge.
